Your First Tennis or Padel Lesson

Not sure what to expect? This guide covers everything you need to know before your first coaching session.

What Happens in a Lesson

Assessment (5-10 minutes)

Your coach will start by getting to know you. They'll ask about your experience, goals, and any injuries or limitations. If you've played before, they may ask you to hit a few balls to assess your current level.

Warm-up (5-10 minutes)

A proper warm-up prepares your body and reduces injury risk. This typically includes light jogging, dynamic stretches, and some easy ball hitting to get comfortable.

Skill Work (30-40 minutes)

The main part of your lesson focuses on technique. For beginners, this means learning grip, stance, and basic strokes. Your coach will demonstrate, then guide you through practice with feedback.

Game Play (5-10 minutes)

Many coaches end with some game-like situations to apply what you've learned. This could be rallying, point play, or specific drills that simulate match conditions.

Wrap-up

Your coach will summarize what you worked on, give you tips to practice on your own, and discuss next steps for your development.

What to Bring

Appropriate Footwear

Tennis or court shoes with non-marking soles. Running shoes are not ideal as they lack lateral support. For padel, specific padel shoes are best but tennis shoes work too.

Comfortable Athletic Clothing

Breathable shorts or skirt and a t-shirt or polo. Cyprus can be hot, so light colors and moisture-wicking fabrics help.

Water Bottle

Stay hydrated, especially in warm weather. Bring at least 500ml of water.

Towel

A small towel for wiping sweat during breaks.

Racket (Optional)

Most coaches can provide a racket for beginners. If you have your own, bring it. Your coach can also advise on racket selection.

Sunscreen & Hat

For outdoor courts, protect yourself from the Cyprus sun. A cap or visor helps with visibility too.

Lesson Duration

30-minute lesson

Good for children or focused technique work on a specific skill. Quick and intensive.

45-minute lesson

A popular choice that balances depth with energy levels. Good for beginners who may tire quickly.

60-minute lesson

The standard lesson length. Allows time for warm-up, skill work, and game play. Recommended for most adults.

90-minute lesson

For serious players or those preparing for competition. Includes more extensive drilling and match practice.
